Dig your hands into the ancient soil surrounding the Yarra River ---known as The Birrarung by the Wurundjeri people. Re-plant native vegetation especially the Myrnong plant which was a staple vegetable for the Wurundjeri people.

Make new friends and help out Nature as well.

The Birrarung event is a monthly commitment ACFIM makes to doing our bit to protect and enhance local Nature in strong collaboration with the Sustainability Co-ordinator at Melbourne Girls College -Andrew Vance and the students and parents at the school.

Join us this Saturday --our focus will be to:

  • Review the native weeping grass (Microlaena stipoides) hand weeding patch on river bank and investigate effect of pampas lily spray (contractors from Yarra council were in on Thursday 1st Sept and conducted:
  • Chemical control of Calp weeds across site. - Pampas Lily, Ivy, Dolichos pea etc treated with Starane -- Flax leaf broom, Fraxinus, and Olive woody weeds cut and painted.
  • Extend wand weed patch if advisable???
  • Mulch murrnong beds
  • Weed around wicking beds
  • Discuss heat mat trail from Acacia Environmental Management (See attached document)
  • Distribute gravel along paths

Morning Tea is provided too!!!

All you need are suitable outdoor attire / your own water container / hat / sunscreen etc

Please Note that the planting site is along the actual Yarra River path beside the school ---the site is beside the MGC Rowing Shed.
