Today, finally, a decision. And it’s the best news we could have hoped for!
Two and a half years after lodging our case – alleging the Morrison Government broke its own laws when assessing Adani’s water-guzzling mine – the Federal Court has ruled in favour of our claim.
Why is this win so significant? It means Adani has to start again with its plans to pump 12.5 billion litres of water from some of our most drought-affected areas to run its climate-wrecking mine. A coal mine can’t operate without water, so this is a major setback for Adani.

This is a great win for the protection of water on our dry continent from coal mining. It’s a win for farmers who depend on reliable flows of river water in our drought-prone landscape.
It sets a precedent that water infrastructure for coal seam gas and large coal mining projects must be assessed under our national environment law, including all potential water sources for the Carmichael mine and other coal mines in the Galilee Basin.

Why should we stop Adani?
One thing we can be sure of is that Adani won’t accept this defeat, and so our work must continue. With your support, we will continue to do everything in our power to stop Adani’s polluting coal mine but we also need to focus on the long game.
What does that look like?
We’ll stop coal mining and replace it with clean exports, sending our sunshine to the world to become a clean energy superpower.
We’re sending a message to big corporations like Adani: if you want to build a coal mine in Australia, you’re going to have to get through us first. It means thinking creatively – not every challenge will end up in court – but you can be sure that we’ll continue to be a force to be reckoned with.
We’ll promote clean solutions like renewable powered energy, hydrogen, steel and aluminium.
We’ll change the story so that more and more Australians can see that coal and gas are not the answer and renewable energy is.
We’ll convince nations that buy our coal and gas to buy clean energy from us instead.
We won’t be bullied by greedy politicians or multinational corporations looking to build polluting coal mines, and who then use the media to tell blatant lies about the impact of burning coal. We will push on, with you.

Public pressure is building. Every day more and more corporations – including others like Adani – are being forced to reconsider the merits of building a coal mine on this beautiful land we call home. Because they know that it will not come without a fight – together, we are a powerful voice for good.
We will not accept defeat. We won’t always have wins like this – while it’s a momentous occasion and one that we should celebrate, there will be others that don’t go our way. We’ll be ready.
We will not stay quiet. We are over 700,000 voices strong. We have impact, influence and independence and we will continue to use our voice and campaign for our planet.
One thing we can be sure of is that Adani won’t accept this defeat, and so our work must continue. With your support, we will continue to do everything in our power to stop Adani’s polluting coal mine but we also need to focus on the long game.
